Leading by Example

Abraham Lincoln put it this way at the close of his Second Inaugural address:

"With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."

This is what we must strive for as a nation, which is what President Bush is doing. He is leading by example and doing what he can to help alleviate the pain and suffering of our fellow citizens. Unlike the unfortunate choice of many in the media and various other rabid liberals who choose to tear down whatever or whomever is in their immediate line of sight, the President is showing the way by doing, leading, encouraging and mobilizing resources. Even though he has been the target of unprecedented attacks by political opponents, he has refused to stoop to their level and is concentrating on getting things done that benefit the needy, not wallowing in the immature business of finger pointing and blame, so characteristic of the left.

The federal government is a giant entity, not necessarily well suited to immediate response. Big ships turn slowly. First response action is the responsibility of local and state officials first, and then federal if needed. The federal government doesn't get involved until requested by state government. All of these groups are giant beurocracies. It is so unfortunate that the state officials did not anticipate the severity of the impending devastation and request federal assistance earlier, but that's why it is called a tragedy, a natural disaster, An ACCIDENT! People drowning in their attics is not George Bush’s fault! People like poverty pimp, Jesse Jackson, rapper, Kenye West, and Civil rights activist, Randall Robinson need to learn this, although I will concede that it is too late for them and most of the left, who thrive on anger, hate and blame. Much of the left is addicted to the rush attained from negative energy and will utilize any tragedy to get their next fix. The rest of us will follow the Presidents lead and remain positive, not looking to blame, but looking to help.

This will entail providing a COORDINATED, COMPREHENSIVE FEDERAL RESPONSE to any large scale crisis and mounting a SWIFT and EFFECTIVE recovery effort....

You see, that's their words. Not the words of some Leftist media organization.

Also, the Governor of LA made formal written request for aid from the Dept. of Homeland Security (of which FEMA is part) on Sunday Aug 28th. That's the day before Katrina made landfall. So quit trying to stop the buck at the local level. Hell, Chimpy didn't even end his vacation for another four days after Louisiana was asking for help.

The President says he can fight the GWOT and aid the victims of Katrina at the same time. Why do you seem to think that I (and many others) can't criticize this Administration and aid NOLA at the same time????? Oh that's right, it's because you're nothing more than a partisan hack.

My goodness you guys rage so easily! Why is it so important for you to hate this president? It's really fascinating. OK, Look; nobody is saying that relief efforts are going hunky dory. In fact, they have been a mess and the president acknowledges this. But like most disasters, it's a fluid situation (no pun intended). Things have been changing for the worse everyday. Relief is finally getting there, but initial response was slow and disorganized. I just can't get over how some people, rather than banding together to fix the problem and encourage the victims and the heroes, feel it necessary to run the country down. For gosh sakes, people are still being rescued and many problems are still intensifying and we've got the entire congressional black caucus ready to lynch the administration! It makes me sick to see the level of vitriol in so many people. It is energy wasted, and only serves to intensify the crisis.

The President did not acknowledge that relief efforts are a mess. In fact he stated on national television.."Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job.". Doesn't sound like someone who is acknowledging any problems what so ever. I guess pointing out fatal incompitance is now "running the country down". Is there no one you cowards will not hide behind?

With the exception of a few believers who've reddened their lips on Reverend Georgie's Kool-Aid as they seized the moment of his photo-op to place another masturbatory picture of the president on their blogs, I have little to add to this debate. My confidence in Washington's competence has eroded to a low unseen since the dark days of Nixon. If Federal government cannot provide adequate armor to shield blasts delivered by an insurgency it failed to imagine, then why should anyone be shocked with the incompentence displayed along the Gulf Coast?

While the president was stumping to reverse a trend of sagging numbers with bad analogies and a swift boat assault on a grieving mother, Brian Williams was on the ground before the storm made landfall. As the new NBC anchor grew increasingly frustrated, his Highness did manage to swing the Imperial Jet past the miles of destruction for a gratuitous gawk at the scenery. Leadership by example, indeed.

When disaster strikes the administration goes on the offensive. The latest talking-point uttered by the ruby-red lips of his majesty's minions was "hard work" in another form. The area hit by Katrina is as large as the United Kingdom. While that may be true, it's hard to imagine the British would have such difficulty in similar efforts to locate London.

FAUX BREAKING NEWS: The White House released a new talking point, the mess in NOLA is the fault of state and local officials. I don't know about anybody else, but a third of my paycheck is seized by the Federal government whereas state and local officials take less than 5%. On that basis alone, I'd expect the Feds to assume a greater role in the relief effort.

Most of that money was used for education. And if you look and listen to those people sitting in their flooded homes, not wanting to leave, or who refused to leave when told to do so, I'd say our money was wasted. "Stupid is as stupid does".

You did know that the mother and daughter getting the 'hug them people' treatment from your beloved leader weren't actually from Biloxi, but were hand-picked for the photo op?

Jeepers creepers, 10,000 or so are dead, floating in Lake George (the EPA's name for New Orleans) or being eaten by rats.

Obviously there are thousands of horror stories that are being realized by everyone from that region, but there were a lot of them that had a choice to leave and they chose poorly. Normally, there choice would not have had this unfortunate consequence had the levy not broken. All I'm saying is that it is immature and irresponsible to try to lay blame on anybody. There will be time later to throw the resulting mud around; I just wish more people had more sense than to do it before the crisis is even close to being over.

Losing? Guess again. And I would appreciate it if you would try to elevate the tone of your remarks to a more sophisticated level and refrain from expletives. They only serve to reveal the caliber of your intellect. We have differing views. It's OK. It's not personal. Please feel free to express your ideas in a logical and controlled manner, or I will delete them and therefore protect you from exposing your debasement to others.

I will admit however, that in one respect you're right. I don't want to give the impression that the victims are at fault, though some of them clearly stayed and continue to stay at their own peril, by their own decision. Most are truly victims and it's tragic. Again, my point is that I hate the way so many, mostly on the left, want to use anything to rip the administration. That is their priority, before even trying to find ways to fix the problem. That is unhealthy and counterproductive. There have been some major screw-ups in handling the resulting flood relief and rescue efforts and there will be people that will answer to that, but now is not the time to openly rip as the rescue is still happening.

The saddest part is the Dems/Liberals are still sitting on their hands on this like they did on Iraq.

Anonymous is correct. George W. Bush is seen posing with two beautiful black women who seemingly point at damage to their house. Here's the thing: It can't be their houses and their anguish is probably feigned because they we're from Biloxi:
Domestic television showed Bush visiting the coast to comfort the people of Biloxi - even hugging some seemingly dazed survivors.

German TV, however, filed a much different report. ZDF news reporter Christine Adelhardt reported the president's visit to be a completely staged event. Their crew witnessed how the open-air food distribution point Bush visited in front of the cameras was hastily set up for his photo-op and then torn down immediately after he and the herd of "news people" had left. And those women Bush hugged for the camera were not even Biloxi locals.

OK, you're right. You and your German friends caught them in the act of concocting another story to inflate the Presidents numbers. Those chicks were actually a couple of models, brought down on a privet jet from a NYC along with their wardrobe and makeup stylists and private "pharmacist", to try to make them look as authentic as possible. The set was designed and built by a team of Broadway set builders (it took a while to find straight ones, because the administration won't allow gays) and brought down on a couple of Hercules choppers and set up the night before the talent arrived. Just out of frame was Karl Rove in an umbrella-covered chair, latte in one hand megaphone in the other, directing the shoot. Condi was also there but was in charge of crew meals. To get the talent to look authentically distraught, Rumsfeld smacked them both with a canoe paddle, and then ran away. The resulting shot was taken at the moment the models were in pain and pointing in the direction Rumsfeld ran. The President, who not only was aware of the plan but also wrote the script himself, did a superb job of improvisational acting and played out the scene until Rove yelled, "Cut!". Not a bad bit of pseudo reality TV. I'd have to give it 1 and a half thumbs up. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I appreciate your contribution to the beat up on Scud blog. I looked at your site. Your work is nice. Your ideology is a bit messed up but hey, that's what makes the world fun right? Actually I don't live in a sheltered B&B, but I'll admit, after reading more of the stuff that's coming from the left these days, I'm getting closer to that all the time. And I'm sorry if you think I was calling the victims stupid, I did not actually say that. But what was said and what anyone with common sense should be able to admit is that for those who could get out and yet chose to ignore evacuation orders, those are the folks who would fall into the category of stupid; or at least they made a stupid decision.

I'll venture that none have you have been down there and actually witnessed the destruction, fed a hungry child, or handed a bottle of water to a dying, elderly person. No, you all just sit in your homes and rage on, and on, and on. Thanks much, its really changing the world for the better.

For twenty-five years conservatives whined that government isn't the solution, it's the problem. To that end, they reduced its revenues (as they inexplicitly expanded it) and rendered its effectiveness in such a way as to match their assertion. Agencies such as FEMA have become little more than shells that provide a steady income to partisan supporters. We are witnessing the Republican dream, private wealth and public squallor.

With no authority to prevent looting, it makes perfect sense to remain in the city and defend your land (especially if it sits on one of the few lots still above water.)

P.S. I didn't expect you to be phased by the disingenuous nature of Chimpy's Biloxi photo-op.
